It doesn't seem eight months have elapsed since we last ventured out to the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith for the GPS Head of the River. And what a miserable day that was — rain, humidity, and a bunch of disappointing results.
But outcomes like that generate even greater commitment and desire to atone. And this weekend was the first opportunity to put that day behind us and build towards redemption in March next year.
The early heats were rowed in perfect conditions — no breeze, a little chill in the air and a mill pond flat surface. Whilst the wind did get up a touch as the morning progressed no one was complaining because the season was finally on in earnest.
A mixed bag by the time it was all over but the bodies and minds will be better for the run. Next week we do it all over again and this time a few less creaks and groans will echo around the course. The countdown has begun!
